TX2011_blog_firstflyer

We have mailed out our first flyer! Texas chapter presidents, please watch your mailbox over the week and make sure you inform your chapter of the convention. Make copies of the package or direct them to the website for all of the forms.

You can also have all of your chapter members sign up to receive the newsletter and other information by email. Direct them to the contact tab so they can be immediately informed of any news on the 2011 convention.

All of the forms are available at the forms tab. You can download the registration form, the bazaar entry form, the scrabook / yearbook form, the service project form, and the memorial form. We hope to see everyone in Austin next year! Deadline for early registration, which only requires a $50 deposit for the ladies, is October 31, 2010!

We want you, Legacies!

TX2011_blog_legacies

Each day of our convention is focused on either the past, the present, or the future. Saturday is our future day, and it is focused on growing a Beta Sigma Phi organization that we can hand off to the next generation. One important part of that mission is the Legacy program.

As a legacy, I know the importance of passing down the traditions of Beta Sigma Phi to our next generation of women. I know what it meant in my life when I moved to a new city and didn't know anyone and when I left the workforce to raise my daughter and no longer had the daily adult connection. My daughter, who is now four, isn't yet a legacy, but she's already seen the joys her "aunties" bring to our lives.

With that in mind, we want to extend an invitation to all unaffiliated legacies who are 17 years old and up. Maybe you are just about to go off to college or you are just about to move to a new city and start your career. Come and celebrate with us and learn the benefits of becoming involved in sorority. Make this your first of many conventions!

Friday

Costume time!

TX2011_blog_costumes

Did you know that Betty Boop is only about eight months older than Beta Sigma Phi?

That means she would be a perfect candidate for a costume to wear at our Friday night event. We are remembering our past, so we're inviting you to come dressed as your favorite actor, singer, cartoon character, fashion icon, or anything from the decades of the '30s to the '80s. More details will come when our plans are finalized in September, but keep an eye out for ideas over the next year.

I found one resource that has a lot of great pictures and ideas for costumes, and the website has decades categories so you can scroll through the different vintage costumes they stock. The shop is called the Dallas Vintage Shop located in Plano, Texas. Check out their website for costume ideas.

You Tube videos

Our inaugural video

We announced our intention to bid for the 2011 convention back in 2009 at the Galveston convention. We performed a fantastic skit with more than 20 participants. When 2010 came around, we did not have that many sisters able to attend the Cruise convention. So, we came up with this video, previewed it on the boat, and put it up on You Tube to announce ourselves once again.

We plan on putting up more videos over the course of the next year, so keep in touch with us on our You Tube channel or just check in often on this website. Click on the You Tube icon at the bottom of the page to go to our You Tube channel to see all of the videos we have so far.

Austin -- THE convention hot spot!

TX2011_blog_austin

As the famous saying goes, Austin is deep in the heart of Texas. This makes it a great central location for a convention. Rich in history, this city has been the capital of our great state since it's formation as the Republic of Texas in 1839. Originally known as Waterloo, the city was renamed Austin after the father of Texas, Stephen F. Austin.

Now, we are the fourth largest city in Texas and the 15th largest city in the nation. We are home to the state government as well as many federal offices. We are home to one of the largest universities in the nation, University of Texas, as well as many smaller, private universities. The students help keep a rich music tradition in the city, earning us the nickname of "Live Music Capital of the World." Austin is also known as Silicon Hills due to the vast number of high-tech businesses located here.

There are so many things to do in the city. Come on Thursday and spend an evening on Sixth Street. Spend Saturday afternoon shopping at the Arboretum or the new Domain shopping centers, both of which are located very close to our hotel, the Renaissance Hotel in north Austin. We look forward to seeing you in June!
